Entering and Exiting Freeways

New drivers can have difficulty reacting to changing traffic conditions. That's why it is important to practice entering and exiting freeways. With practice, you'll figure out how to adjust your speed, search for hazards, change lanes and merge with traffic.

Use the tips below for entering and exiting freeways.

Entering a Freeway

  • Turn on your turn signal so drivers know you are entering.
  • Check the front, rear and your blind spot.
  • Look for a stable gap in traffic that is not closing.
  • If there is traffic, look for a car to merge BEHIND while maintaining a steady, slightly accelerating speed. Try not to choose a car for which you have to speed up considerably to merge ahead.
  • Merge smoothly into the gap in traffic.
  • Adjust your speed to the surrounding traffic.
  • Turn off your turn signal and check your rearview mirror.

Exiting a Freeway

  • Plan your exit and turn on your turn signal well ahead of the exit.
  • Maintain your speed until you enter the exit lane.
  • Enter the exit ramp and use controlled braking to reduce your speed to the speed limit or less.
  • Prepare to slow down or stop suddenly in case there is heavy traffic or the exit ramp speed limit is low.
